A red 1969 Chevrolet Camaro took home Best of Show honors on Sunday from last weekend's Fall AutoFair at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. The Camaro was originally painted green, but had been restored by its owner Dan Herzberg of Mount Holly, North Carolina, who bought it five years ago in Georgia. For Herzberg, this was his first Best of Show honor. "There's some really, really nice cars here and I'm thrilled to win. I'm shocked," said Herzberg, a longtime AutoFair attendee. "I pulled the car out of a pine tree thicket in Georgia. It was absolutely nasty and in horrible shape. I wanted something that I could restore and have to my liking. This is how it turned out. It's fun to drive. It's a new car but it's in an old shell." "What really attracted the judges was the goal of preserving the stock look (while keeping) all of the modern components that were used in achieving that look," said NASCAR on FOX's Mike Joy, who was on the panel of judges. "The paint is fantastic. The interior is flawless. This is a great build to be proud of and for others to try to work their way up to. "This is such a great event because it brings together a disparity of hobbyists. You have a little bit of everything here. I can't think of a single segment of the collector car hobby that is not represented at AutoFair." The first runner up for Best of Show honors was a black 1957 Ford Fairlane 300, owned by Richard Hunter, while Anderson Pearson's Lancaster Grey 1941 Buick Roadmaster took second runner up honors at the end of the four-day show. Other winners included: -- Bob Laidlein Award (Most Original): Daryl Page's and Walt Hollifield's 1968 Ford LTD -- Mecklenburg Strelitz Award (Ladies' Choice): Howard Mergen's 1955 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible -- Cabarrus Cup (Most Creative):Tom Goodman's 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Convertible V8 -- Concord Concours (Best Restoration): Dennis and Gail Marcus' 1956 Ford Sedan Station Wagon Original article posted on FOXSports.com | By Samuel Reiman | Sep 26, 2016 at 4:04p ET

The 1966 Olds 442 F85 Club Coupe
Tri-Power 400/360 HP, 4-Speed Oldsmobile was included in General Motors’ mid-'60s move to “Coke-bottle” styling, adapting the kicked-up rear quarter-panel shape first seen in post-war European sports-car styling and which later migrated to Ford’s Mustang. The new silhouette added a sporting air to the entire GM intermediate lineup, and the 442 version of Oldsmobile’s F85 had the performance and handling to back its appearance in one of the General’s most balanced offerings. It was not until 1966, however, that Olds resurrected the Tri-Power carburetion it had first made available in the 1950s. Sold new at St. Claire Motor Co. of San Jose, California, this 1966 Oldsmobile F85 442 Club Coupe is quite a rare find today with Tri-Power carburetion. A very unique example with superb chassis and body and rare code-C48 radio/heater/defroster delete, it was meticulously restored in 2012 at an investment of more than $88,000. It was refinished in its original code-M Autumn Bronze over mostly original sheet metal and presents with a highly detailed interior, engine and undercarriage, better-than-original triple-plated and polished chrome and beautiful brightwork. The correctly coded V-block L69 400/360 HP Tri-Power V-8 engine is teamed with a full-synchro Muncie M21 close-ratio 4-speed transmission and G80 Anti-Spin rear axle. The performance of its triple-carbureted V-8 is well matched by the advanced handling that prompted contemporary reviewers to judge the 1966 442 the most balanced muscle car available to buyers. Oldsmobile may be gone, but collectible muscle cars such as this contribute mightily to the company’s performance legacy. Chattanooga, Tennessee, isn’t the biggest of cities, but it’s certainly becoming a popular destination thanks to a number of great attractions, restaurants, and nearby scenery. For car guys, it’s becoming an attraction because of the Chattanooga Cruise-In – an event hosted by long-standing Chattanooga companies Coker Tire and Honest Charley Speed Shop. You may have heard of these companies or have an understanding of what each company represents in the old-car hobby, but it’s tough to get the full scope without actually checking out the facilities firsthand. That notion is what started the Chattanooga Cruise In – a free-to-the-public open house to show off all of the cool stuff in the works at Coker Tire and Honest Charley plus a cruise-in to let locals show off their classic cars. Five years later, it has turned into the biggest single-day cruise-in event in the Southeast, and the April 11, 2015 event was one for the record books. The official event hours were 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but folks rolled in as early as 7 a.m. to get parked. With parking on the streets and parking lots that surround the Coker Tire compound, space was somewhat limited, even though the staff had reserved more street closures than normal. Hundreds of Camaros, Novas, Chevelles, Corvettes, and more rolled into the event, with everything from restored stockers to full-on Pro Touring builds on hand. Food vendors and neighboring restaurants offered great food for the attendees, while several door prizes kept folks anxiously awaiting the results of the 3 p.m. drawing. By 4 p.m., the crowds had dispersed and the flurry of car-guy activity was over. At the end of the day, the Chattanooga Police Officers who worked the entry gates estimated 2,000 cars and 15,000 spectators had entered the event. Many of those cars proudly wore the Chevy Bow Tie, so we picked out our favorites, and put together a special gallery of the best Chevys at the 2015 Chattanooga Cruise-In. |
